Scary Saenz

What Marx meant [about ‘alienated labor’] was that industrialism takes something that was once an intimate part of a man, namely his labor, and turns it into a commodity that can be bought and sold on the open market.

I love reading Rick Saenz. His blog over at Cumberland Books contains some of the most insightful writing I’ve seen on the Web. Case in point, the above quote, from his recent series “The Lost Tools of Living.”

  1. Jamie! Have you become an agrarian?! Are you ready to make a stand against a monolithic culture of unredeemed materialism?

  2. After I posted, I noticed Richard M. Weaver’s Ideas Have Consequences on your bookshelf, so I need to admit I liberated the above phrase from Weaver!
